(In screaming voice) “MORTAL KOMBAT !!!” With the release of the first Mortal Kombat movie, in 1995, “MORTAL KOMBAT” was a chant i was addicted to saying with my gamer friends for a decent chunk of that year.
Three years earlier in 1992, i, like many other gamers, were glued to playing the legendary arcade game. Due to its massive cult gamer following, the original Mortal Kombat movie was shown in theaters to the delight of gaming fans, grossing over $122 million in box office revenue worldwide.
Fast forward 24 years to 2019, the Mortal Kombat name remains as popular as ever. Since the first arcade game release, a second Mortal Kombat film (Annihilation) screened in 1997. Four more arcade games were made in the series – Mortal Kombat II, 1993. Mortal Kombat 3, 1995. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, 1995 and Mortal Kombat 4, 1997. Spin off games on all home computer and consoles systems totals almost 20 and the latest game – Mortal Kombat 11, hit the Xbox, PS and Switch only a month ago.
Perfect timing then by Warner Brothers to announce that a third film in the franchise has been confirmed and is already in pre-production. The team behind the new Mortal Kombat movie will include – producer James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring), filmmaker Simon McQuoid (Microsoft Xbox 360 Halo 3 internet campaign), producer Todd Garner (Executive producer for films – The One, 2001 and XXX, 2002), with Larry Kasanoff, E. Bennett Walsh, Michael Clear, Sean Robins as executive producers and screenplay by Greg Russo.
South Australia has been chosen as the location for filming which may come as a surprise to many in the industry, however, Executive Producer, E.Bennett Walsh said “South Australia was the perfect location for the film”
Director Simon McQuoid said “the movie would go back to the “core essence” of the characters of the popular video game. On the surface, the game works a certain way, but we’ve kind of gone deeper than that. We’ve gone back to the absolute sort of source material and we’ve taken that and we are turning that into an epic world.”
Reports of the movie’s plot remain tight lipped but leaks are coming out that the new movie will feature a new lead character – Cole Turner. Described as “a Philadelphia” boxer, Cole is a single father and former boxer recruited by Jackson ‘Jax’ Bridges to join a team of human fighters to defend the Earth against fierce fighters from another world. Cole’s daughter, known as Emily, said to be an incredible fighter at only 12 years of age will join Cole to take on the ‘bad guys’. Classic Mortal Kombat characters Sonya Blade, Kano, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Raiden (the God of Thunder) will join Cole on the quest to defend our planet from the evil that has taken control of it.
Filming of the the Warner Brothers action flick will take place at several locations around South Australia between September and December. The expected release date of the movie has not been confirmed at this time
